Rooted in four generations of Hungarian winemaking heritage, founder and winemaker Csaba Szakál brings a unique perspective to his craft, blending time-honored Old World traditions with the innovation and spirit of the New World. His journey began in the vineyards of Hungary, learning at the side of his father, István, and grandfather, Béla. A serendipitous meeting with his future wife, Sandra Scott, a Sonoma native, led him to the iconic wine regions of Napa and Sonoma Valley. Together, they began their winemaking journey in a humble garage—an early chapter that would blossom into the creation of En Garde.
Csaba’s deep-rooted passion for winemaking was forged in his childhood, amidst the vineyards of his homeland. That early connection to the land instilled in him a profound respect for nature’s influence on each vintage. He believes that truly great wine is born from collaboration—between skilled growers, meticulous vineyard practices, and a deep understanding of the terroir.
Today, Csaba partners with esteemed growers across Napa Valley’s most celebrated mountain appellations—Atlas Peak, Diamond Mountain, Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain—to craft world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. For Pinot Noir, he turns to the cool-climate coastal regions of Sonoma, capturing the nuanced character of each site with remarkable precision. Through his hands-on approach, Csaba consistently produces wines of elegance, depth, and distinction—wines that speak of place, time, and the artistry behind every bottle, even in the most challenging vintages.
